Your orchestra librarian, Chi-shing Leung, is happy to take your requests for copies of orchestra excerpts for auditions. Like you, he is a busy student, so please observe the following guidelines.
- Allow for the librarian to process your request. This means you will need to plan ahead.
- Do the librarian the courtesy of looking up the call numbers in the library. If you cannot find it, we may not own it; many pieces are "rental only." Instructions on how to find call numbers are below.
- Please include the specific movements and measure numbers you need copied. This will save time and, thus, you will receive your excerpts sooner.
Go to the SFCM Library's website: WOLFI.
Click on SEARCH THE CATALOG.
Click on AUTHOR/TITLE.
Type in the composer's name and the title of the piece; click on Submit Search. Once it begins to list the (probably many) works of the composer, you may want to limit the search to find the set of parts.
To limit your findings, click on Limit this Search. Limit the search by material type (choose PRINTED MUSIC). Click on Limit/sort items retrieved using above data.
You should now see a short list of the Conservatory's holdings.
There is a button in the lower left corner of the screen which allows you to select between Brief and Extended Display. Select Extended Display; this will show the location in bold of each holding.
Now, here's the exciting part! If there is an entry with the words Orchestra Library L2 as its location, then we own the parts. Write down the entry's Call Number on the Excerpt Request Form, where indicated. Place the completed form in the Librarian's box. Again, allow at least 10 days for the librarian to process your request.
If you do not see the words Orchestra Library L2, then we do not own the parts. Don't despair; your private teacher may be a good source for hard-to-find orchestral excerpts.
Download the Excerpt Request Form here (Word document), here (HTML), or here (PDF).
